Deny Me j shogren 2008 Put a pair of pliers in her pocket and walked the mile into town men reading the concordance looked up underground they said she was bound love together whatever i just came here to untwist your crown don't deny what you can't see even if you deny me even if you find i've erased your thin line she put her glasses underneath her pillow and closed her eyes for midsummers day love in the rear view mirror well, it's just easier than something to say love together whatever i just came her for the portugal grey don't deny what you can't feel even if you deny me even if you find 30 days time out of mind and i'm waiting for you this time if you turn around you might find i've erased your thin line sometimes i believe that their is something out there but then again i'm never sure why it would care

Paper Barn J Shogren (Jahajunti music, ASCAP, 2010) Went to bed crying Woke up with a smile on my face She spent the whole night Staying awake Correcting my mistakes She built me a paper barn She built me a paper barn I know we all love to watch Paper burn But sometimes it just comes around To our turn To bend, fold, and forgive All those paper-‐thin cuts And slights of hand That we do our best But we never comprehend Or outlive So build her a paper barn Build her a paper barn And turn that yellow spot Into the sun Woke up crying No I aint getting out of bed Sometimes it feels like My own skin won't Stay on my head Build her a paper barn Build her a paper barn I know we all love to watch Paper burn But sometimes it just comes around To our turn To bend, fold, and forgive All those paper-‐thin cuts and slights of hand We do our best But we never comprehend or outlive So build her a paper barn Build her a paper barn And turn that yellow spot Into the sun

about

Hello again friends

Back with the 4th Restrung-Resung-Remixed-Remastered: DENY ME & PAPER BARN. These two bare bones melancholy tunes—DENY ME & PAPER BARN—feature two amazing musicians—SALLY VAN METER and JALAN CROSSLAND. A decade later, I truly enjoyed returning to songs, giving me a chance to sing them again with their unique “voices” in my ear.

Sally plays resonator on DENY ME. In 1994, She won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album for her work on “The Great Dobro Sessions,” a collaborative album featuring 10 resonator guitar players. I reached out to her to play on a different song, and when she heard Deny Me she asked to play on it too because “…the resonator was made for this style of song.” Coming to Laramie was unlikely, so Dan Tinker rigged up a mobile studio and we recorded her down in Colorado. Her playing brought tears to our eyes that day. Later on she also gave me the best counsel on how to approach the resonator—“play like Ella sings.” That’s a high bar, but I took that advice to heart, even if I fall short.

Jalan plays on PAPER BARN. Long a fan of his unpredictable non-linear show-stopping guitar playing, he also has the gentle understated touch of a master. We sat down together on afternoon at Thunderground Sound Studio and ran through this song a few times and Dan recorded it in one take, I think. We were trying to capture the sound of sitting around a campfire playing tunes with a friend, albeit one of your best guitar-playing friends.

Thanks for listening
