Hello friends and neighbors

Usually, I am not so verbose…so here we go.

First, thank you all for the support and affection over the years for the Shanghai’d musical family. So many great musicians and friends have contributed to a wonderful 15 years of musical adventures in hi-fi recording. The one thing that has become clear over the years is that we have all grown in skill and confidence both as people and musicians.

Given this experience, I took advantage of the lockdown to study up on the technical details of sound engineering—I flopped into the deep end on how to mix music in the 21st century. Mixing music is as much of an art as writing and performing the music. So many choices—an infinite set, in fact—on how each instrument should sound and how each voice can resonate and elevate, and how you blend all these elements together into one cohesive sound to make people smile, think, or dance or all the above. I learned the names of professional mixers, names unfamiliar to me until now. I learned from these experts both in person on zoom, or mixing groups and over the YouTube. Professional mixing engineers are the Rockstar nerds you never heard of. But the choices they make about how to record and mix your favorite music matter so much. I like these nerds; I am a nerd; so, learning to be nerdier in another nerdy dimension was fun.

My raw musical material came from the four albums [Jahamericana, American Holly, Bird Bones & Muscle, God Bless these Crooked Little Songs] that we recorded with Dan Tinker at his Thunderground Sound Studio here in Laramie between 2006-2012. Dan was a patient tutor. He showed me the ropes as I stumbled around the studio trying to get the sounds in my head out into the world. Jim Wilson mastered all the original recordings, and I learned so much from him too.

So last year I asked if Dan would track down all the recordings of the 60+ songs—bit by bit, part by part—to mess with on my own here in my Stump studio (my computer and gear in my basement). And he did, and I am forever grateful.

Below are the links to two of my favorite older songs that I remixed this past year—American Holly and Curry. Both songs are similar in that they are in a Sergio Leone cinemascope style—begin with focused narrow close-up on the face and then one pans out to the wild wide-open landscape.

Both songs have all the original parts we recorded at Thunderground, except I re-sang all my vocals and added a few new guitar parts here at the Stump. Once the new material was added, I started the process of remixing the songs: I mixed, rejected, rebooted, restarted, deleted, shared, listened to advice, remixed, remixed again, remixed once again to create the “final” version… the one I could live with, at least for today. We then took the next step to master the mix—which is like adding the sizzle to the steak. I worked with a new collaborator on the mastering end of things: David Benyamin in Paris. David mastered these two mixes into a sound that I hope you will love as much as I do.

Well…. that’s my Resung+Resung+Remixed+Remastered (Rx4) pandemic isolation report…from my studio, the Stump. I will be releasing more Rx4 songs in pairs this fall—finishing up Me & Genghis Khan and Big Blue Bird of Happiness right now. Then I got Deny Me, Well-fed Man…. on deck.

If you yourself have a song or two you would like to hear again given the Rx4 treatment, let me know. They only song I do not have the original stems for is Salvation…but it was not so bad the first time around.
