about

Sally Van Meter plays resonator on DENY ME. In 1994, She won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album for her work on “The Great Dobro Sessions,” a collaborative album featuring 10 resonator guitar players. I reached out to her to play on a different song, and when she heard Deny Me she asked to play on it too because “…the resonator was made for this style of song.” Coming to Laramie was unlikely, so Dan Tinker rigged up a mobile studio and we recorded her down in Colorado. Her playing brought tears to our eyes that day. Later on she also gave me the best counsel on how to approach the resonator—“play like Ella sings.” That’s a high bar, but I took that advice to heart, even if I fall short.

lyrics

Deny Me
j shogren 2008

Put a pair of pliers in her pocket
and walked the mile into town
men reading the concordance looked up
underground they said she was bound
love together whatever
i just came here to untwist your crown

don't deny what you can't see
even if you deny me
even if you find
i've erased your thin line

she put her glasses underneath her pillow
and closed her eyes for midsummers day
love in the rear view mirror
well, it's just easier than something to say
love together whatever
i just came her for the portugal grey

don't deny what you can't feel
even if you deny me
even if you find
30 days time out of mind
and i'm waiting for you this time
if you turn around you might find
i've erased your thin line

sometimes i believe that their is something out there
but then again i'm never sure why it would care
